"Sen. Alves a disgrace to his state"  ~The Providence Journal, 8/17/2004.

Welcome!

This is a public participation website to offer feedback and citizen criticism to RI State Senator Stephen Alves (D- West Warwick).

Offering criticism to elected officials, through writing letters to the editor at the local newspaper, or by uploading websites such as this, is good citizenship. It gets the public involved in politics, and it serves as one of the natural "checks and balances" that exist in a free society.

Why don't we like Senator Alves?

Let us count the ways:

1. We don’t like how Alves brought a defamation suit against a fellow citizen, Alan Palazzo.  It was a classic example of a Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation (SLAPP). RI Superior Court Judge Netti C. Vogel ruled that Alves’ suit  “constituted illegal litigation intended to intimidate and silence Palazzo.”

2. Based on how he treated Mr. Palazzo and based on our own interactions with Alves, we don't think he is respectful of citizens, in our opinion.

3. We don't like the fact that Alves voted in the Senate committee to deny Rhode Islanders the right to decide the voter initiative proposal, a bill which has been deemed "model legislation" and which is backed by 20,000+ citizen petitioners, every taxpayer group in the state, and a coalition of 34 citizens groups. Alves' committee vote to kill voter initiative shows more total disregard for the citizens of our state. It appears Alves wants the RI Democratic party bosses to maintain their absolute control.

4. We don't like the suggestions in the below article titled "Alves' curious career." Nor do we like the implications of the "no stranger to controversy" article below.

5. We don't like how friendly Alves seems to be with the other State House bosses.

6. We don't like the current image of West Warwick in the Rhode Island political landscape, and we don't think Alves helps it, in our opinion.

7. We question the appearance of conflict of interest with respect to the tobacco settlement which involved over half a billion dollars. On his official website site, Alves' biography notes that he is a VP at UBS Paine Webber and the Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee. He was Vice Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee when the Tobacco Settlement took place.  Yet, UBS Paine Webber was the lead underwriter. Did Alves vote on the matters? Didn't he vote?
Did he abstain? Did he vote yea or nay? It doesn't really matter. What matters is that the public doesn't have any confidence as a result of the potential for conflict of interest and the appearance of conflict of interest. What did Alves do behind the scenes when the committee wasn't voting?

The RI Constitution says:
"Section 7. Ethical conduct. -- The people of the state of Rhode Island believe that public officials and employees must adhere to the highest standards of ethical conduct, respect the public trust and the rights of all persons, be open, accountable and responsive, avoid the appearance of impropriety and not use their position for private gain or advantage."

So, in our opinion, Alves is doing a lousy job as a public official. Overall, the public has no confidence.
